Barkas Campervans Conversions - A Trip Down Memory Lane< back
At Stuart Insurances, we spend much of our time working hard to deliver campervan insurance that meets all of our customers’ needs. However, we do get time off and when we do, it allows us to create interesting blogs about events from the campervanning world.
In this blog, we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane to look at a vehicle from the past that is still being used today for campervan conversions. The manufacturer in question is Barkas, a now defunct company that originated in the old East German republic.
The Super Barkas B1000
With front wheel drive and two-stroke engine, the Barkas B1000 is far from being a luxury camper van, but it’s one that has a rich pedigree. Often seen at camper rallies across the UK and Ireland, Barkas B1000 camper conversions have the history of pre-cold War Germany running through their veins.
Originally manufactured in the Karl-Marx-Stadt factory in Chemnitz, the Barkas brand began in 1961 and continued for over three decades, finally closing its doors in 1991, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There were a few four-stroke versions produced just before the factory closed, but not many.
Anyone owning one of these vans very much gets a view into yesteryear, but the van - which bears more than a passing resemblance to the classic that is the VW camper - can be kitted out to make it more homely, as there’s plenty of room inside, so you get heritage and comfort!
